Articles from Behind the Walls: Life of Convent Girls in the Philippines

March 4, 2023 by admin Leave a Comment

The following are personal essays from a book project I did in 2005, BEHIND THE WALLS: LIFE OF CONVENT GIRLS (Anvil, 2005).  For more information about the book, please visit https://ceciliabrainard.com/book/behind-the-walls/ .  The publisher Anvil Philippines may have a few copies left in their online store.

The book has been praised by Loida Nicolas, Chair and CEO, TLC Beatrice Foods as follows:

“The stories in this book will give readers an inkling of how and why the colegiala women think, speak and act as they do. The nuns have definitely put their stamp on our psyche — for good and for not so good. But most of all, they taught us how to live and how to overcome.”

I’ll be posting articles from that book in this blog post, so check back:

Welcome!

I am a daughter of the Philippines and an adopted daughter of America. I have also traveled to many places so I am also a daughter of the Earth. My experiences have found their way into my stories, which try to depict characters caught in important moments in their lives, situations that force them to act, make decisions, change. I try to see the world from my own point of view, not the dominant Western one, thus my interest in history, culture, and setting. But my characters carry my stories; they are the most important in my story-telling. I have to dive deep into them to understand their humanity – their goodness as well as their badness, their beauty as well as their ugliness. Just like us. Just like each of us. I need to know where they came from, where they are now, so I understand where they are going. Just like us.
