Kindle Release of Veronica Montes’ Short Story Collection

August 25, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

My publishing house PALH  (Philippine American Literary House) announces the release of

Benedicta Takes Wing and Other Stories, by Veronica Montes is now available in Kindle < https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GM9BKSD>

It is also available in paperback and hardcover from Amazon.

Benedicta Takes Wing and Other Stories is the debut collection of short fiction by Filipino American writer Veronica Montes. In these fourteen stories, Montes explores the intricate workings of Filipino families as they struggle to define their place in the world. Two American-born sisters bumble their way through an unforgettable night at a Manila nightclub famed for its staff of midgets. The mother of legendary warrior Gabriela Silang has been lost to history, but here she is given voice to share her story. A lonely, middle-aged woman’s life changes when she stumbles on a surrogate son and together they create a makeshift family.

“Veronica Montes limn the lives of Filipino families,” writes author Benito Vergara, “with wit, simmering fury, and an abundance of generosity. With her sharp eye for the telling detail, she depicts the grief and everyday joy handed down as inheritance, the affections and denials the bind Filipino families together.”

Welcome!

I am a daughter of the Philippines and an adopted daughter of America. I have also traveled to many places so I am also a daughter of the Earth. My experiences have found their way into my stories, which try to depict characters caught in important moments in their lives, situations that force them to act, make decisions, change. I try to see the world from my own point of view, not the dominant Western one, thus my interest in history, culture, and setting. But my characters carry my stories; they are the most important in my story-telling. I have to dive deep into them to understand their humanity – their goodness as well as their badness, their beauty as well as their ugliness. Just like us. Just like each of us. I need to know where they came from, where they are now, so I understand where they are going. Just like us.
