Midnight Visitor: Sketch from the Pink Grandma

April 22, 2020 by admin 2 Comments

The Midnight Visitor Hello Grandchildren, Grandpa has the Ring app which allows him to see who's outside our house via video. He discovered that we have visitors that enter the courtyard late at night. There's a large orange cat and another strange looking creature that come around.  They sniff around the courtyard and leave. Once I had leftover cat food out there and the … [Read more...] about Midnight Visitor: Sketch from the Pink Grandma

Dear Readers, Happy Easter! May God's loving mercy fill your life. I am sharing an article I wrote for Positively Filipino about Coronavirus: The Beginning.  It talks about my visit to the Philippines in late January, early February, when Coronavirus was exploding in China. Thanks to Tony Perez for Artistic Guidance

January 18, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

Putting a face on those who helped Brainard's Magical Years: Tony Perez (Playwright, Novelist, & Painter) gave artistic guidance to Cecilia Brainard when she was working on the sketches for Magical Years: Memories & Sketches. He taught her what pencils, pen and ink, paper to use; he critiqued her work all along. Cecilia Brainard first met Tony Perez in the 1990s when the USIS sponsored … [Read more...] about Thanks to Tony Perez for Artistic Guidance

Cecilia Brainard’s Book of Sketches: Magical Years

January 13, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

The writer Carlene Sobrino Bonnivier received her copy of my Magical Years: Memories & Sketches, and she wrote back: "Oh, Cecilia - I love your book. You DO capture the luminosity of childhood, something that I personally feel so strongly, and strive over and over to share with the rest of the world through my stories. Here you reveal it so sweetly. Thank you very much... If this seems … [Read more...] about Cecilia Brainard’s Book of Sketches: Magical Years

magical years

I'm excited about my book, Magical Years: Memories & Sketches, which collects 43 of my reed and pen and ink drawings. Some of you have been following my progress as a sketcher since December last year, when I picked up a simple book about sketching and started drawing, first in pencil, then pen and ink, and later bamboo reed, which Van Gogh did -- I love his reed … [Read more...] about Magical Years: Memories & Sketches by Cecilia Brainard — pictures

Bamboo Reed Paintings by Cecilia Brainard

August 12, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

Fuente Osmena Park, Cebu, Philippines (copyright 2019 by Cecilia Brainard) I've been experimenting some more with bamboo reed painting.  I also use barbecue stick for finer work. I like the energy, the unruly and wild feeling of reed painting. Here are two reed paintings based on my memories of my birth city, Cebu, Philippines. Kiosk of Magellan's Cross, Cebu, Philippines (copyright … [Read more...] about Bamboo Reed Paintings by Cecilia Brainard

Cecilia Brainard’s Old Haunted House in Cebu Philippines — Pen and Ink

April 30, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

I'm sharing a corrected version of the Old Haunted House in Cebu, my interpretation of the Villalon House. This sat on a hill in Cebu and I used to stare at this last thing at night and wonder about the ghosts and enchanted people that supposedly occupied the house. Sometimes the house would be lit up and the next day people would say the spirits had a party. This was all part of my growing up in … [Read more...] about Cecilia Brainard’s Old Haunted House in Cebu Philippines — Pen and Ink

Sarimanok Sketch by Cecilia Brainard

January 15, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

I sketched this antique "sarimanok" silver item which I got from Zamboaga when I did a talk for USIS, around 1992. From Wikipedia: "The Sarimanok is the legendary bird that has become an ubiquitous symbol of Maranao art. It is depicted as a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail, holding a fish on its beak or talons. The head is profusely decorated with scroll, leaf, and spiral motifs. It is … [Read more...] about Sarimanok Sketch by Cecilia Brainard

Welcome!

I am a daughter of the Philippines and an adopted daughter of America. I have also traveled to many places so I am also a daughter of the Earth. My experiences have found their way into my stories, which try to depict characters caught in important moments in their lives, situations that force them to act, make decisions, change. I try to see the world from my own point of view, not the dominant Western one, thus my interest in history, culture, and setting. But my characters carry my stories; they are the most important in my story-telling. I have to dive deep into them to understand their humanity – their goodness as well as their badness, their beauty as well as their ugliness. Just like us. Just like each of us. I need to know where they came from, where they are now, so I understand where they are going. Just like us.
